What is ulcerative colitis?
Ulcerative colitis (UC) is an inflammatory process known as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Ulcerative Colitis affects the large intestine and has been recognized as a disease of genetic predisposition. The disease processes of UC stimulates the immune system to attack the cells of the internal lining of the large intestine. This immune response leads to widespread inflammation of the mucous membrane and further destruction of intestinal tissues. This process leaves the patient with characteristic ulcers (the cardinal sign of ulcerative colitis that extend deep into the tissues of the large intestine. In extreme cases, the ulcers of ulcerative colitis may extend all the way through the intestinal wall leading to perforation which is a medical emergency
How do I know if I have ulcerative colitis?
The signs and symptoms of ulcerative colitis are similar to several other disease processes making diagnosis by a gastrointestinal specialist important. Symptoms include low grade fever, crampy abdominal pain, low back pain, persistent unrelenting diarrhea, fatigue, rectal bleeding, and fatty stools. Other individuals report experiencing fluctuations between constipation and diarrhea, anxiety and depression.
How is Ulcerative Colitis typically treated?
Traditional treatments include medications, bowel rest, dietary and lifestyle changes, and possible surgery to remove damaged segments of the large intestine. Hospitalization is often required during bouts of relentless diarrhea for control of intestinal inflammation with intravenous (IV) steroids, fluid replacement and bowel rest.
How does hyperbaric oxygen therapy treat ulcerative colitis?
While there is currently no known cure for ulcerative colitis the goal of treatment is controlling symptoms and disease progression. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) has been shown to alter the inflammatory process of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) due to the hyper- oxygenation of intestinal tissues and the stimulation of permanent new blood vessel growth for improved blood flow. Several patients treated with hyperbaric oxygen treatment along with their traditional treatment regimen have reported significant improvement in their ulcerative colitis (UC) symptoms. Many patients report that they experience a longer period of time in between episodes of diarrhea. This allows them to enjoy life and complete day to day routines with less anxiety related to the incidence of frequent uncontrollable diarrhea. and long term relief of symptoms.
