Targeting Cancer Cell Metabolism

Cancer cells are hungry. To feed their rapid growth and division, their metabolism changes. Moreover, they use sugar (glucose) in a different way to normal cells. The video below, created by Nature Reviews Drug Discovery, illustrates cancer cell proliferation (rapid reproduction) and helps us to build a rationale for how to starve the cancer of its energy sources.

 

 

Lowering blood glucose levels takes away some of the energy source that cancer cells need to grow and the ketone bodies that are produced by the diet provide the needed energy that normal cells in the body need to function. Additionally, hyperbaric oxygen therapy contributes by delivering high concentrations of oxygen to areas where blood flow may be restricted. Tumors are not like other normal tissues in our body because they have different circulatory systems. This abnormality lends to the tumors being oxygen deprived and more susceptible to damage by high levels of oxygen ultimately leading to cell death.

We look forward to seeing additional research over the next few years in hopes that the combining of non toxic treatment modalities like Hypebaric Oxygen Therapy (HBO2T) and the Ketogenic Diet are not only just an adjunct to traditional therapies but also as a means of helping patients that have chemo and radiation resistant tumors.
