Fibromyalgia and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

On May 26, 2015 the results of a Prospective study were published via with regard to the use of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and its ability to diminish Fibromyalgia. Patients with onset of Fibromyalgia of at least 2 years were selected to be treated 40 times (5 days a week) at 2.0 ATA for 90 minutes with 100% oxygen. Both before and after these 40 treatments patients underwent SPECT imaging to track any changes in brain activity. The results of the imaging showed that the patients had rectification of the abnormal brain activity specifically a decrease in hyperactivity in the posterior region and elevation of the reduced activity in the frontal areas. The researchers did observe during the treatment sessions that patients pain can fluctuate including getting worse in the first 10-20 treatments but then resolve. What to take away from these results is that there is now evidence that hyperbaric oxygen therapy can improve the symptoms ergo quality of life of patients who suffer from Fibromyalgia.

The figure shows the results of the normalized mean changes as projected on the brain maps, left BAs (A) and right BAs (B). We colored the BAs that show significant changes in activity using the same color code as in Figs 6 and 7 – from light blue (BA with the strongest activity reduction) to light red (BA with the highest activity elevation).
